PILATES
Pilates isn’t just a series of exercises, it’s a conceptual approach to movement. It involves movements and exercises that help strengthen the deep inner core muscles of your transverse abdominals and the deep multifidus muscles of your back through slow controlled movements. Pilates has been called a “thinking way of movement” and is named after its inventor Joseph Pilates who formulated the exercises in the 1920s. Pilates is an excellent preventative technique that will strengthen your body against potential injury. It combines the focus on suppleness that you find in yoga with the emphasis on strength building you find in the gym. In this way it aims to create balance and natural poise, taking into consideration all the factors involved in the maintenance of a healthy body.
Essentially, Pilates is a systematic way to:
- achieve optimal strength, tone, flexibility and posture
- isolate, activate and condition deep muscles
- build core abdominal and back strength
- restore natural posture
- develop strength, flexibility and endurance
- tone and elongate without adding bulk
- enhance mobility and agility
- alleviate pain and tension
